EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Water issues critical to El Paso’s future will take center stage Tuesday morning when the Texas House Committee on Natural Resources meets in the Lower Valley.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Texas A&M Research Center. It will cover oversight of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, discussions of Rio Grande water access between Texas and New Mexico, and possible new ways the state can increase its overall water supply.

State Rep. Mary Gonzalez, who represents District 75, said it is important the committee is meeting in the Borderland, giving members a firsthand perspective on how water challenges are affecting the region as new industries, including data centers, move to El Paso.

In a press release, Gonzalez wrote, “As a proud state representative of El Paso County, I am excited to coordinate with Chairman Cody Harris (Palestine) to bring the Texas House Committee on Natural Resources to our community. It is rare for committees to meet outside of the State Capitol in Austin. This hearing is an unique opportunity that will bring attention to our borderland region and all that it has to offer. Water is vital to the sustainability of our region’s future. As we have found new ways to reuse and preserve our resources, it is important that we explore innovative methods to protect our water supply. Our region has been a leader in this area, and is excited to continue leading for future generations.”

Gonzalez also invited local leaders, advocates and community members to attend so the committee can hear directly from El Paso.
