CANUTILLO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — With the final beam ready to be hoisted into place, the Canutillo Independent School District marked a major step in building its new middle school campus.

On Tuesday morning, Canutillo ISD held a “Topping Out Ceremony” at the construction site of the new Canutillo Middle School at 6100 Upper Valley Rd.

The ceremony celebrated the completion of the building’s structural framework.

As part of the celebration, attendees signed the last beam before it was lifted into position.

Funded through the 2024 Canutillo Bond, the district said the $106.7 million school will serve the Upper Valley portion of the district and replace the current Canutillo Middle School campus on Bosque Road, which is more than four decades old and has infrastructural and instructional needs.

The district described the new campus as a “state-of-the-art, 21st Century Learning Facility designed around collaboration, flexibility and student-centered learning.”

Canutillo ISD said the project is being managed by the Procedeo Group. Banes General Contractors is serving as the general contractor, and DLR Group and Root Architects are the project architects.

The district said the project is on schedule and on budget and is expected to be completed in 2027.

“This is more than a construction milestone. It is a visible sign that the future of Canutillo Middle School is taking shape,” Canutillo Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego said in a written statement. “Every beam, every wall and every space being built represents our commitment to giving students a school designed for how they learn today and how they will learn tomorrow.”

Canutillo Middle School Principal Andrea Esparza said she is excited for the growing Canutillo community to see the new campus.

“We are putting this in the center of the Upper Valley where we are welcoming and enjoying the new kids that are coming into our campus, our new community, our new families,” Esparza said. “We can’t wait to share all this beautiful new modernization with our community.”
