EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A person was taken to the hospital after an incident in downtown El Paso on Thursday.

The incident was reported on San Antonio Avenue and North Mesa Street around noon.

City officials said a portion of the eaves of a private and vacant building fell and injured an individual, who was transported with minor injuries.

City officials said investigators determined that a portion of the building’s cornice detached due to deteriorated structural connections.

Because the remaining cornice is unstable and directly above the public sidewalk, staff has determined that the condition presents an imminent danger to public safety and that removal of the remaining cornice is necessary, city officials said.

City officials said notices will be posted at the property and mailed to the property owner on Friday morning.

The sidewalk remains barricaded, and Streets and Maintenance is addressing debris, officials said.

Staff also confirmed there is no building permit activity associated with the property in the city’s electronic records, which extend back at least 20 years, officials said.
