A student was struck by a vehicle during drop-off Wednesday morning at Collins Garden Elementary School on the West Side. School staff immediately helped her and assessed her condition, Principal Jennifer Ruiz said in a letter to families.

The student was taken to a hospital with a leg injury, the San Antonio Fire Department said. Emergency medical services, San Antonio police and San Antonio Independent School District police investigated.

Several students and family members witnessed the student being struck, according to Ruiz.

“We know seeing this may have been upsetting to some students, and we want to keep families informed of situations as soon as we are able,” Ruiz said. “The well-being of our students is a top priority in SAISD schools.”

The principal thanked families for their understanding and support and encouraged them to call the school with any questions.

Collins Garden Elementary is temporarily operating at the Storm Elementary campus while its permanent campus undergoes renovations, according to the district. The relocation began with the 2026-27 school year, and the district says construction is expected to last two years.
