ARLINGTON — While some teams are changing their play-callers across the league, the Cowboys won’t be one of them.
“I do,” Jones said. “Yes, I do. He certainly is sitting there, taking it on the shoulders, which goes with the territory. I feel that he’s confident in the things he’s trying to do. I’ll say it one more time. The thing that probably bothers me the most is how they ran between the tackles, so to speak, and have that running game up in there where we have a lot of strength. That’s something we really have to look at and will.”
Parker, 34, took over an overhauled defense for the Cowboys from the year before. The Cowboys changed the majority of their starters from a defense that finished as the worst scoring defense in the league. So far, the Cowboys’ defense hasn’t been much improved. They entered Thursday night near the bottom of the league in most categories. They allowed 24 points on Thursday, which was below their season average, but it came at the hands of a rookie undrafted quarterback who moved the ball well against them and helped the Buccaneers convert on more than half of their third-down attempts.
After the game, Jones wasn’t the only one who backed Parker.
“100% faith,” Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams said. “At the end of the day, we step in between those lines and we have to execute to the best of our abilities, every single down. And no matter what CP calls, we have to execute.”
Cowboys corner DaRon Bland added: “CP, he’s a guy that’s going to come in tomorrow and we’re going to check out the X’s and O’s and see what we can get better at. That’s always his thing.”
The Cowboys have some time to find it. They just wrapped up three games in less than two weeks. They now have 10 days before they play on the road against the Green Bay Packers.
For now, the Cowboys hope the only change that happens is improvement.
“I don’t want to go there at all,” Jones said when asked for his evaluation of Parker. “I would say that on all sides of the ball here tonight, that we had penalties, I didn’t know about two times we turned the ball over. We did all the things to that score end up like it was. And I thought we had the team that could get out of here with a win. So it’s very disappointing.”
