KERRVILLE, Texas – Families who lost loved ones in the deadly 2025 floods at Camp Mystic are expected to get a key update in court later today as a judge considers whether the camp’s bankruptcy filing should also pause lawsuits against the camp’s owners.
A bankruptcy court in Houston is set to take up the issue after Camp Mystic, a summer camp in Kerr County where 27 campers and counselors died during flooding in 2025, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Several families of the victims filed civil lawsuits against the camp and its owners, the Eastlands, alleging wrongful death and gross negligence following the flooding on July 4, 2025. The Chapter 11 filing in June put lawsuits against the camp itself on hold, but families are asking that the pause not extend to members of the Eastland family.
The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Houston.
The court proceeding comes as the Texas Rangers have started a separate investigation, enacting search warrants against the Eastlands to determine whether they should face criminal charges.
