The crowd: Techno clubbers, vampires, drag queens and “It’s not a phase, Mom!” goths.
Elysium has been hosting Austin’s alternative nightlife scene since 2001 and is the only goth club in the downtown area. The black-walled venue features a sunken dance floor and a large seating area with couches next to a bar, which serves moderately priced mixed drinks and beer. The music leans toward smaller local and touring industrial, electronic, darkwave and synthpop bands, as well as alternative DJs. The building, which also houses The 13th Floor, was listed for sale in September, leaving the future of both venues uncertain. Elysium may seem intimidating to those unfamiliar with goth subculture, but it warmly welcomes everyone — no piercings required.
