LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program is working to provide Christmas gifts for children in need in the Lubbock area.
Major Jamie Clay has worked with the Lubbock Salvation Army for 19 years.
“Every year I’m very shocked at how many families really are in need,” Clay said. “And obviously we can’t take everybody, but we’re able to process those that we have and get them the best available things out there so that way those children can have a Christmas morning where they are remembered.”
Requests range from toys to basic essentials
Clay said she’s seen children request Barbies, video games, and sometimes just clothes.
“It always breaks my heart, but when moms are just in need of the basic essentials, diapers, you know,” Clay said. “And again, the community always comes out in great support and provides all of those items.”
Program depends on community support
Clay said the program would not be possible without donor support.
“With the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, if we didn’t have donor support in that community, we would never be able to do this program,” Clay said. “There’s no way that I would be able to budget for, say, 500 children for Christmas.”
Currently, 215 families and about 500 children are signed up for Angel Tree. Clay expects that number to climb once the final count comes in.
“But I think Lubbock is extremely giving,” Clay said. “They really do want to help anybody else. They don’t want anyone suffering. You can see that in their generosity.”
