The teen who was fatally shot at a south Fort Worth apartment complex Wednesday evening was planning to graduate from high school in May.

Samuel Esteban Navarrete was living with friends after his parents were deported to Colombia. Now a GoFundMe has been organized to send the 16-year-old’s body home to his family. Organizer Lourdes Dominguez called Navarrete’s death a “heartbreaking loss” and wrote that he will be forever remembered by his friends, family and community.

“Samuel was balancing school and working not only to support himself but also to send money back home to his mother, Diana,” Dominguez said in the GoFundMe. “While many teenagers his age were simply enjoying their high school years Samuel was working toward a better future and doing everything he could to make his parents proud.”

Officers were called to the shooting at the Stallion Pointe Apartments near Everman about 6:30 p.m. They found Navarrete in the driver’s seat of a car. He was suffering from a gunshot wound, officials said, and died at the scene. No arrests have been announced in the case.

The GoFundMe for Navarrete had raised over $4,000 toward a $9,000 goal as of Friday morning.
