Remember when weekend plans were easy? It went something like this: bar, club, Denny’s, done. Those were the days – before we were burdened with grown-up taste buds and the desire to do daytime activities.

Enter the Weekend Culinary Guide. Our new series serves up two prime picks from Dallas’s many brunch and event options. Why? Because adulting isn’t all about car payments–we also get the good stuff.

Read on for this week’s cozy take on a classic, plus an excellent excuse for day drinking.

Local eggs, goat cheese and cream layered with fresh veggies, sun-dried tomatoes and herbs in a puff pastry shell, topped with green goddess-tossed salad. $18

Encina chef-owner Matt Balke’s dislike of old quiche clichés – overly thick and always falling apart – prompted him to rethink the classic dish from the bottom up. Starting with farm-sourced eggs, he adds rich cream, fresh asparagus, tarragon, chives, and a few other delicious ingredients, then bakes it golden in a cast-iron skillet. To balance its “soft, silky center and crisp, flaky crust,” Balke finishes the quiche with a salad tossed in another classic, revisited: green goddess dressing. The result is elevated, yet comforting, which is right on-brand for this Oak Cliff gem.
