Another longtime San Antonio nightlife staple has called it quits after more than two decades of memories on the dance floor. But its sudden farewell has locals reminiscing about more than just nights spent two-stepping.
Cowboys Dancehall San Antonio announced its closure Friday afternoon, October 9, in a heartfelt social media post, citing ongoing construction surrounding the venue as one of its biggest challenges.
“We have made extensive efforts to find a solution that would allow us to continue operating at our longtime home,” the business wrote. “Unfortunately, despite those efforts, the challenges facing our business have left us without a viable path forward under the present circumstances.”
With construction projected to continue until 2028, Cowboys said it could no longer sustain operations. While a comeback isn’t entirely off the table, the business emphasized that there are currently no plans to reopen.
The announcement had longtime patrons reminiscing about the friendships, romances and memories made on the dance floor.
“Of all places I met the love of my life here. Sad to see it’s gone,” John Bednarek commented.
“i’m gonna miss this place so much, i found my love for dancing here & made so many friends for life,” Kayla Gornall wrote.
However, not everyone agreed with the venue’s explanation for closing.
“They had issues long before construction. If other businesses are still open around the same construction zone, clearly construction isn’t the main issue,” Kristan Alvarez commented.
While some questioned the reason behind the closure, others held out hope that Cowboys could one day make a comeback.
“This isn’t the ending we wanted, but we’re grateful for every moment you’ve shared with us,” the business wrote.
