HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A driver was killed, and a police officer was left injured after multiple crashes in southwest Houston overnight, according to investigators.
The Houston Police Department said on Saturday morning that officers responded to a deadly crash involving two vehicles near the intersection of Hillcroft Avenue and Richmond Avenue.
Officers said initial information indicates a vehicle was traveling northbound on Hillcroft Avenue at a high rate of speed before running a red light and crashing into another vehicle. Officials said that Houston Fire Department crews responded to the scene and extracted the driver of the second vehicle, who was later pronounced dead.
According to investigators, the suspect fled the scene a short distance away from the crash site before he was taken into custody by patrol officers. The suspect was evaluated for intoxication, officials said, but did not meet that threshold at the scene.
HPD said it is working with the District Attorney’s Office on a possible charge of reckless manslaughter. Officials said the suspect was a man in his late 20s, but did not reveal his identity.
According to police, they established a perimeter around the scene to continue the investigation into the deadly crash. Investigators said that multiple vehicles then crashed into the perimeter, including drivers who authorities said were intoxicated.
HPD said one sergeant was hit by one of the vehicles during the investigation while he was on foot. Officials said the sergeant suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Another one of those who crashed into the perimeter had a felony warrant, according to police. Officers said they took that driver into custody.
Officials did not identify the drivers who crashed into the perimeter or specify how many vehicles were involved. HPD said the investigation remains ongoing.
