FILE – A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer listens during a briefing, Jan. 27, 2025, in Silver Spring, Md.

A man was struck and injured by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer early Saturday morning during a pursuit, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Clay Road in northwest Houston, according to deputies. As of early Saturday afternoon, the man was being treated at a local hospital for a possible broken leg. The ICE agents were pursuing a white pickup truck traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, according to the sheriff’s office.

During a press conference Saturday, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Anthony McConnell said the man was 48 years old and was in ICE custody. The man’s name and legal status are currently unknown.

McConnell also said ICE had a warrant for the driver of the truck and the passenger allegedly does not have legal status in the U.S. McConnell did not have details regarding the nature of the warrant.

“From what we understand, there were ICE agents in pursuit of a wanted suspect,” McConnell said. “The ICE agent was trying to box him in to the backside of the building at the corner and struck the passenger. At this point in time, he was transported to the hospital. I’m waiting for a medical update, but we believe he has a broken leg.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the vehicle fled on foot.

ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE operations, did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the incident.

The sheriff’s office said it is investigating the incident. This comes several months after an ICE agent fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston in July.
