Richland High School football player Katron Walker Jr. was killed Saturday in a car wreck, Royals head coach Ged Kates confirmed to the Star-Telegram.

Walker, 17, was a junior wide receiver. Details about the wreck were not available.

Family member Lakisha Johnson announced the death on Facebook, referring to Walker by his nickname “Kane.”

“Yes, we know that earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal, but right now, we are heartbroken, devastated, shocked, and at a loss for words,” she posted. “Yet, even in the midst of this pain, we still trust God. And I have to believe that Kane fulfilled his purpose, even at just 17 years old.”

Walker transferred to Richland this season from Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering in Tennessee.

His father, Katron Walker, posted on Facebook:

“I just [can’t] take it I love you son I wish it was me.”
