El Paso Animal Services is inviting children ages 8 to 13 to join its Kitty Readers book club.

A program that helps young readers build confidence while spending time with shelter cats.

According to the Animal Services Department, the program gives children an opportunity to practice reading in a relaxed environment without the pressure of grades or judgment.

Animal Services says reading to cats can help children develop patience, kindness, and empathy while giving shelter animals companionship and socialization.

Families interested in participating must first attend an in-person orientation with their child.

During the orientation, families will learn about the program, volunteer expectations, cat body language and how reading can help shelter cats feel more comfortable.

After completing orientation, children can visit participating shelter locations throughout the year to read to the cats.

El Paso Animal Services announced two upcoming orientation sessions:

Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m.

Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m.

Orientations are held at El Paso Animal Services at 5001 Fred Wilson Ave, El Paso, TX 79906.
