EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Young chess players went head-to-head with local attorneys.
Saturday, during the third annual Kids vs. Lawyers Chess Tournament.
The tournament was hosted by County Commissioner Iliana Holguin, City Representatives Chris Canales and Lily Limon, and the El Paso Bar Association.
The day brought together youth players from across the region, with divisions for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
Organizers said the tournament gives students an opportunity to interact with practicing attorneys while learning about higher education, civic leadership, and careers in law.
Rebekah Holguin, a student at Valle Verde Early College High School, said chess has taught her important skills that extend beyond the board.
“Chess has taught me to be resilient,” Holguin said. “I think that’s why I’m good at so many puzzles.”
She said chess encourages players to look at situations differently and think strategically.
“Chess teaches a lot of life lessons that you can use in everyday life,” Holguin said.
Organizers said the tournament is designed to build connections between young people and community leaders while showing students the opportunities available through the legal profession.
