Both teams entered Friday night’s district contest with 1-1 records. The Fort Worth Southwest Raiders were looking to solidify their hold on third place in the district standings, while the Fort Worth Dunbar Wildcats hoped to climb out of fourth.
Southwest accomplished its goal emphatically, cruising to a 56-14 victory over Dunbar Friday at Clark Stadium.
Raiders head coach Joseph Turner said the high-scoring win provided opportunities for the entire roster to contribute.
“All the boys got to get in and get some playing time,” Turner said. “We are happy for them. They did a great job.”
Southwest wasted little time taking control. After recovering the opening kickoff, the Raiders struck first when running back Caison Ingram scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:18 remaining in the first quarter.
Less than 30 seconds later, running back Dante Kalala broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-0.
Kalala, who finished with three touchdowns, credited his offensive line for the strong performance.
“Running behind my O-line tonight was very fun,” Kalala said.
The Raiders added to their advantage later in the quarter when a bad snap on a Dunbar punt attempt resulted in a safety, increasing the lead to 16-0.
The Wildcats briefly generated momentum when defensive back Kenneth Anderson intercepted a Southwest pass at the Dunbar 31-yard line, but the Raiders quickly regained control.
Southwest opened the second quarter with another scoring drive as quarterback Julius Caesar scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 22-0.
The Raiders continued to attack through the air on their next possession. Caesar connected with wide receiver Josiah Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 29-0.
With 3:23 remaining in the half, wide receiver Davian Fields broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown, extending Southwest’s lead to 35-0. Although the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, the Raiders were not finished.
Just before halftime, Fields hauled in a 38-yard touchdown reception to give Southwest a commanding 42-0 lead at the break.
The Raiders’ defense also delivered before intermission, as Timothy Johnson intercepted a Dunbar pass with 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Southwest picked up right where it left off after halftime. Kalala scored his third touchdown of the night on a 31-yard run, extending the lead to 49-0.
Dunbar got on the scoreboard later in the third quarter when wide receiver Detrick James caught a 20-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 49-6.
Southwest added another touchdown to make it 56-6 before Dunbar scored one final time late in the game. With 1:10 remaining, James caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Allen, and Allen ran in the two-point conversion to account for the final margin, 56-14.
Despite the dominant victory, Kalala said the team remains focused on the remainder of the season.
“I look forward to playing more football,” Kalala said. “I don’t take any win for granted.”
Southwest will face Diamond Hill-Jarvis on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Scarborough-Handley Field.
“We have a short week next week, but we look forward to showing up for practice on Monday and just getting better and better and better,” Turner said.
Dunbar will play Eastern Hills on Friday, Oct. 16, at Herman Clark Stadium.
