Among the many places where there have been irregularities in voting the last few years, Harris County has been near the center of the issues. The 2020 and 2022 elections saw multiple lawsuits filed over balloting and polling locations. So, people’s concerns have been high for a while, and they are growing again as the midterms approach.
People are sick of chaos, drama, and the lack of transparency in elections. They have lost faith in the system almost entirely. They want things done correctly and neatly. Something that has been a monumental task in recent years. But the Harris County GOP is feeling optimistic heading into the election season.
Harris County GOP spokesperson Melissa Conway says they have been making strong efforts at finding avenues for transparency and educating voters, but the voters must meet them halfway.
“Transparency builds confidence, confidence builds turnout, and that is what we really all want,” she says.
Those two words, transparency and confidence, have been hard to come by in many elections. Not just recently, either. We have had issues in our elections for years, the Dangling Chad incident in 2000 is just one of many examples.
Of course, no election is perfect. But the Harris County GOP is at least trying to get it close.
“We are hopeful with all the additional training, education, and transparency safeguard in place, the election will work better than ever,” says Conway.
Conway adds confidence has been growing across the board from their view. It could not come at a better time, either, as faith in the electorate plummets to all-time lows.
Early voting in Texas begins October 19th.
