Houstonians planning to take advantage of store sales Monday may be relieved to know that most are open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. For people who need to mail a letter or go to a bank, it’s a different story.

The federal holiday falls on Oct. 12 this year, closing U.S. Post Office retail counters and suspending regular mail delivery. Some bank branches, including Wells Fargo, will also be closed.

Shoppers can visit retailers such as H-E-B and Target, which are open for regular business, though hours may vary by location.

Columbus Day, a federal holiday, is observed on the second Monday in October.
