AUSTIN, Texas — UT Austin students and community members will gather this evening for an Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration featuring a shared meal, storytelling, and cultural activities.
The event is hosted by UT’s Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program in collaboration with the Native American and Indigenous Peoples’ Association.

The gathering comes as Texas law restricts certain diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at public universities. That raises questions about how Indigenous students feel represented and supported on campus, and whether they have the same resources and opportunities to celebrate their heritage.
The celebration is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Glickman Conference Center, RLP 1.302B, and is open to the wider community.
CBS Austin will be attending this event and will update this story with more information as we get it.
