“I’m sure we’ll talk,” Manning said Monday. “He’s asked me some questions about teams we’ve played. It’s good having him in my corner.”

Manning and Simpson share a friendship. Both elite quarterback recruits, Simpson attended the Manning Passing Academy earlier this year alongside Arch. The Manning family annually invites some of the top college quarterbacks in the country to attend the event in Thibodeaux, La., where they coach up high school QBs and participate in skills challenges.

It won’t be easy for Manning to match his pal’s production in Athens. Simpson completed 24 of his 38 passing attempts for 276 yards in a 24-21 Alabama victory Sept. 29. Crucially, the Crimson Tide did not turn the ball over in that game.

Turnovers doomed the Longhorns in their meetings with the Bulldogs last season. Texas gave the ball away three times in an SEC championship game defeat to Georgia and four times in an October loss to the Bulldogs at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Manning briefly replaced Quinn Ewers at quarterback during that regular-season game, completing three of his six attempts for 19 yards.

“I think I’m a way different player from last year,” Manning said. “But yeah, I’ll definitely be watching the tape, continue to watch it and just try to get a better feel for these guys.”

Texas vs Georgia: Longhorns looking to corral Gunner Stockton

Manning won’t be the only talented quarterback on the field Saturday night.

Statistically, Georgia’s Gunner Stockton is having the better year. Stockton, also in his first full season as a starter, has completed 69.4% of his passes for 2,040 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s thrown just two interceptions while adding another 321 yards and seven TDs on the ground.

He’s one of several mobile quarterbacks on the schedule for the Texas defense to cope with. John Mateer, Cutter Boley, Blake Shapen and Diego Pavia have all proven more than capable of hurting defenses with their legs this season. From that group, only Boley left his encounter with the Longhorns having surpassed his season average in rushing yards.

Managing that aspect of Stockton’s game is again a priority for the Texas defensive front, edge rusher Ethan Burke said.

“Keeping him in the pocket is essential,” Burke said Monday.

In recent weeks, Arkansas transfer Brad Spence has emerged as a weapon who can help Texas achieve exactly that. The hybrid linebacker has lined up all over the defensive front six this year, and was at his most effective last time out against Vanderbilt. He shadowed the elusive Pavia, helping Texas wrangle him for six sacks.

Pavia had been sacked just seven times all season before that game. Georgia, likewise, has been elite at keeping the pressure off Stockton, giving up just 11 sacks in nine games.

Can Texas, which is tied for the nation’s lead at 3.78 sacks per game, bottle up Stockton, too?
