In early October, the Fort Worth Zoo announced it welcomed two female, critically endangered Sumatran tiger cubs, Barani and Malu, to the family. They were born on July 1 and are the first Sumatran tigers ever born at Fort Worth Zoo, the first cubs born in the revamped Predators of Asia & Africa tiger habitat, and the first tiger cubs at the zoo in nearly 20 years!

They made their debut recently and have had fun exploring their new home… including their pool. But when one of the girls decided to go in for a closer look, she fell in and wasn’t sure how to react to this first swimming lesson!

The zoo shared more in the caption, saying that the zookeepers are following mom, Ndari’s lead on where and how the cubs spend their time. “They will have access to the main habitat as well as their behind-the-scenes den, where they may choose to rest or nap.”

Viewers were completely smitten with the cubs, and everybody agreed they’re absolutely adorable. One commenter shared, “OMG. I love the pounce in the water and immediately NOPE. And I love how they hug each other!” We feel the same way!

Why Barani and Malu’s Births Matter for Their Species’ Future

Fewer than 650 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, mainly because of habitat loss and deforestation, so every birth matters for the species’ conservation.

The Fort Worth Zoo participates in a cooperative Sumatran tiger breeding program with other North American zoos. The program helps maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population, and Barani and Malu are its newest additions.

These two little cubs represent hope for the future of their critically endangered species!
