Higher education is no longer defined by a single or traditional path to earning a certificate or degree. Today’s learners are balancing careers, raising families, serving their communities and pursuing new opportunities at every stage of life. College and universities must evolve to provide education that is flexible, accessible and connected to the places where people live and work.
That philosophy is shaping the future of Tarleton State University in Fort Worth.
Earlier this year, Tarleton State unveiled its long-term vision for its Fort Worth campus during Vision Fort Worth: Rooted and Rising. The event introduced an updated master plan that reflects the university’s continued investment and its confidence in the city’s future. More importantly, it reinforced a broader strategy of expanding educational access across Tarrant County and beyond while strengthening connections with employers, schools, healthcare organizations and community partners.
Tarleton State Fort Worth, located along Chisholm Trail Parkway, continues to serve as a destination for students seeking a university experience in one of Texas’ most vibrant regions, with academic offerings now ranging from the full undergraduate experience and graduate level degrees. The updated Fort Worth master plan outlines future facilities, enhanced student spaces, improved campus access, and infrastructure designed to support learning, collaboration, and innovation for years to come.
That vision extends beyond Fort Worth.
Tarleton State has intentionally developed a network of extended campuses that allows students to pursue their educational goals closer to home while remaining connected to one university and one larger system. Each location serves the unique needs of its region, yet together they reflect a shared commitment to making higher education more accessible.
In Waco, a partnership with McClennan Community College celebrating 25 years this fall, Tarleton State provides academic programs and student support that strengthen educational opportunities throughout Central Texas. At the Texas A&M-RELLIS Campus in Bryan, the university collaborates within The Texas A&M University System to prepare graduates for careers that support the needs of the surrounding communities.
This August, another chapter started in downtown Fort Worth as the first phase of Texas A&M-Fort Worth opened its doors. Tarleton State’s Office of Extended Education and Workforce Development will establish a presence within the new campus, creating additional opportunities for professional development, workforce training, continuing education and lifelong learning. The downtown location complements Tarleton State’s existing Fort Worth campus by expanding access for working professionals and organizations seeking flexible educational options focused on medical lab sciences, biotechnology, and other fields in health sciences and STEM.
Accessibility also means meeting students wherever they are. Through Tarleton State Online, learners across Texas and beyond can earn degrees, complete graduate programs, or gain additional credentials without relocating or interrupting their careers. Online education has become an essential pathway for many individuals, providing the flexibility needed to balance education with work, family and other responsibilities.
Each extended campus and learning location has a distinct purpose, but together they represent a single vision. Education should adapt to the learner rather than requiring learners to fit a single modeor modality.
That approach also benefits employers and communities. Texas continues to need educators, nurses, engineers, business professionals, agricultural leaders, technology specialists and public servants who are prepared to meet evolving workforce demands. By aligning academic programs with regional needs and working alongside industry partners, Tarleton State helps prepare graduates who are ready to contribute from day one.
The theme Rooted and Rising reflects more than the continued evolution of Tarleton State Fort Worth. It represents a university that is expanding its reach while remaining grounded in its mission to provide accessible, affordable and high-quality education.
Whether someone begins their journey at the Fort Worth campus along Chisholm Trail Parkway, through Extended Education in downtown , in Waco, at Texas A&M-RELLIS in Bryan, or online, the goal remains the same: removing barriers, expanding access, and creating pathways to success is the ultimate goal.
