EAST LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) is combining with Texas-based University Federal Credit Union (UFCU), the organization announced Tuesday.
MSUFCU officials say the combination “unites two financially strong and well-capitalized institutions to represent more than 850,000 members and $13.5 billion in assets.”
Both organizations share deep roots in higher education and community-centered service, MSUFCU officials said.
When the merger is complete, current MSUFCU President and CEO April Clobes will serve as the CEO of the combined organization. Michael Crowl, the current UFCU President and CEO, will serve as president.
“Michael and I share a strong belief that growth isn’t about scale; it’s about value,” Clobes said, per a press release. “By uniting our resources, talent, and shared higher education heritage, we are expanding our services and driving greater impact. We are building a resilient organization that will invest in advanced technology and long-term stability to best serve members’ evolving needs today and well into the future.”
MSUFCU officials say mergers and acquisitions have served as “a core element” of the credit union’s growth strategy over the last decade, enabling it to “scale resources while maintaining financial stability.”
Both brands will continue to exist following the merger and operate as MSUFCU in Michigan and Illinois, and UFCU in Texas.
“This latest combination brings together two strong organizations to expand talent, improve technological capabilities, and widen community impact,” a press release from MSUFCU said.
As of Tuesday, both institutions are seeking regulatory approval and operating under a business-as-usual approach. MSUFCU says members will experience no immediate changes, keeping their existing account numbers, debit and credit cards, loan terms, and digital banking access.
MSUFCU’s foundational relationships with educational institutions, students, alumni, and local partners “remain central to its purpose” and the organization says combining resources will allow it to deepen its local community giving and financial literacy programs over time.
Reflecting this joint effort, the organization has adopted the shared tagline “Building Dreams Together.” Officials say the phrase “highlights a mutual commitment to people-centered growth and member success.”
