The pilot killed in a single-plane crash last week in Fort Worth has been identified as 67-year-old John Unangst.
Video filmed by a witness the morning of Oct. 7 showed the plane in flames in a patch of grass near Hicks Airfield. Unangst, the plane’s sole occupant, died at the scene.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office did not indicate the cause of death.
Preliminary information indicated the airplane, a low-wing Lancair IV-P, had engine issues and turned back toward Hicks Airfield before crashing.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and is expected to release more details in the coming weeks.
Hicks Airfield has no air traffic control tower, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, but it is common for smaller airports to operate without towers.
This was the second fatal aviation accident near Hicks Airfield in less than a year. In October 2025, two people died when a twin-engine King Air crashed into a parking lot behind businesses near the airfield.
