LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock Area United Way and Lubbock ISD will host the annual United We Read campaign on Thursday, Oct. 15.
Lubbock Area United Way representatives, Lubbock ISD Superintendent Dr. Rollo, Board President Nancy Sharp, and students will participate in the event at Anita Carmona-Harrison Elementary. Staff members and community volunteers will read “Say Something” by Peter H. Reynolds, followed by an arts-and-crafts activity based on the book.
United We Read is an annual community literacy event that encourages second graders to build reading skills and prepare for third grade. Lubbock Area United Way and Lubbock ISD have partnered on the event for the past nine years to emphasize grade-level reading and encourage a lifelong love of reading.
Each fall, volunteers join Lubbock ISD staff in every second-grade classroom across the district to read to students, lead a hands-on craft, and give every second-grade student a copy of the featured book to take home.
