Houston’s Jewish young professionals came together for an evening of holiday celebration and connection at “Smoke, Mirrors & Sukkot,” a joint event hosted by Olami Houston, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston’s Minnette and Jerome Robinson Young Adult Division (YAD), and YJP Houston.

Held in the beautiful sukkah at Chabad of Uptown, the gathering combined Sukkot traditions with food, laughter and entertainment. Participants enjoyed a delicious pasta bar, poke bowls and an open bar; mingled with friends; and had the opportunity to shake the lulav and etrog. Illusionist Robert Berry delighted the crowd with a performance that brought moments of wonder and shared laughter.

Beyond the evening’s festivities, the partnership itself was a meaningful part of the celebration. By bringing together their networks and working toward a shared goal, the three organizations drew an enthusiastic crowd and created opportunities for young adults to meet people beyond their usual circles.

Sukkot offers a fitting setting for this kind of gathering. The sukkah welcomes people into a shared space, while the four species – traditionally understood to represent different members of the Jewish people – express the importance of coming together. That spirit of unity was reflected in both the planning of the event and the friendships formed and strengthened throughout the evening.

It was a joy to see participants having such an amazing time while connecting with one another and with Jewish tradition. The evening reminded members how much can be accomplished when organizations combine their efforts to serve the community.

Photographer Hagit Bibi preserved a wonderful evening. Members hope the connections made in the sukkah will continue to grow long after the holiday ends.
