I get a very unique kind of headache, and you may be experiencing the same thing.

I call it my “San Diego Chargers headache.” Does that sound weird? Let me explain.

Imagine the lightning bolt on the old San Diego Chargers football helmets. Now imagine that same bolt running from your right temple, curving over the side of your head, and ending somewhere behind your ear. That’s pretty much the path my headache takes.

Even calling it a “headache” doesn’t seem quite right. For the most part, there’s no constant pain. Then I’ll make a sudden movement, or God forbid, sneeze, and it feels like the entire right side of my head is about to explode.

I’ve suspected allergies might be contributing to these headaches, and right now, the pollen situation in Lubbock certainly isn’t helping.

Ragweed levels are running fairly high, around a 4 on a 5-point scale. That’s not quite extreme, but it’s certainly enough to make allergy sufferers miserable. We’re talking runny noses, congestion, sneezing, and sinus pressure that can contribute to headaches.

Not to be outdone, grass pollen is hanging around at moderate levels.

And what about the rain? You’d think a good rain would wash all those allergens away, and sometimes it does temporarily knock pollen levels down. Unfortunately, thunderstorms can also break pollen particles apart and stir allergens into the air, potentially making things worse for some people.

So if you’ve been experiencing a headache, runny nose, or congestion without other symptoms, don’t automatically assume you’ve caught a cold, the flu, or COVID. It could be seasonal allergies.

Of course, allergies aren’t the only explanation, and those illnesses can share some of the same symptoms.
