Capital Metro has begun construction on the new North Burnet/Uptown Station, a major addition to the city’s Red Line corridor connecting Downtown Austin to Leander.

AUSTIN, Texas — Big changes are on the way for Austin commuters.

CapMetro has officially started construction on the new North Burnet/Uptown Station, part of the Red Line corridor that connects Downtown Austin to Leander.

Located just north of the existing Kramer Station near The Domain, the new stop is expected to become the second-busiest station in the CapMetro system, behind only the downtown station.

It sits within the Uptown ATX development -an area that already includes apartments and office space- with plans for future retail and hospitality projects.

The North Burnet/Uptown Station isn’t funded through Project Connect, which is the city’s multibillion-dollar transit expansion approved by voters in 2020. Still, it supports the project’s broader goal to expand and enhance Red Line service.

“This is a long time coming and a great step in the right direction,” CapMetro’s executive vice president and chief planning and development officer Sharmila Mukherjee said.

“It’s encouraging to bring transit-oriented development options and have private sector support in achieving our long-term goals. CapMetro and our private partner Brandywine [Realty Trust] came together to make that happen.”

The new station will feature larger platforms to handle more riders, as well as pedestrian and bike pathways connecting to nearby housing and office spaces. Planned safety and security improvements include better lighting and surveillance systems.

Mukherjee said CapMetro is also preparing for stronger bus connections at the new site, aligning routes 392 and 803 MetroRapid to serve as part of a larger transportation hub for the North Burnet and Domain area.

The project is a joint effort between CapMetro and Brandywine Realty Trust, ensuring residents and workers in one of Austin’s fastest-growing districts have convenient rail access.

Construction is now underway, marking another milestone in North Austin’s ongoing development boom and CapMetro’s effort to grow along with it.
