The deaths of Caleb Furley, a Norman father, and his 4-year-old son, Andres, are under investigation after their bodies were found Wednesday in Gainesville, Texas, following an Amber Alert.

Norman police are working to understand why Furley left Norman with his son and ended up dead in Texas. Andres’ mother was supposed to pick him up from Furley’s home Monday, but the two were missing.

“So that initial call for us came out Monday evening at 11 o’clock p.m. We immediately called in detectives and started working on that case. The development based on the investigation that they did led them to believe that both there was some risk for both of them,” Capt. Lee McWorther of Norman police said.

The situation led to an Amber Alert and a child-stealing charge. On Wednesday morning, Gainesville police received a report from a relative of Furley’s about a man and child seen at a local store Monday afternoon. The caller described the encounter as suspicious.

“And then Gainesville called us,” McWorther said.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage in the area Wednesday morning, which led them to the discovery of the deceased man and child.

The Dallas County medical examiner confirmed their identities Thursday but has not yet determined the cause of death.

Furley was a senior and a computer science major at the University of Oklahoma. His landlord described him off-camera as a model tenant.

In an arrest warrant, Andres’ mother and Furley’s mother expressed concerns about Furley’s mental health.

“Mom talks about some concerns with some increased mental health issues that he was seeing somebody and that he had stopped, and that she had some concerns,” McWorther said.

Investigators say it remains unclear what led to the father and son’s deaths.

The University of Oklahoma released a statement saying it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and offering condolences to the family and everyone affected. The investigation is ongoing.
