And that makes the job pretty important.
The department summed it up with a simple message in its recruitment announcement:
It’s your voice in the darkness that gives hope.
That’s a pretty powerful way to describe a job that most of us hope we’ll never need someone to do for us.

Emergency dispatchers serve as a critical link between the public and emergency personnel.
Their work can involve answering calls for assistance, gathering important information and communicating with first responders.
It’s a job that requires the ability to stay focused and communicate clearly, particularly when the person on the other end of the phone might be frightened, upset or facing a dangerous situation.
Think about it. Most of us have trouble remaining calm when the drive-thru gets our order wrong.
Now imagine having to remain composed while helping somebody who’s experiencing an actual emergency.
It’s certainly not a job for everybody. But for the right person, it can be an incredibly meaningful career.
