Man identified after being found dead along far South Side highway

SAN ANTONIO — The medical examiner’s office identified a man found dead along Interstate 37 as 33-year-old Eddie Maciel Jr.

Maciel died from blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A tow truck driver spotted what appeared to be a body in the grass beside northbound I-37, just north of Loop 1604, shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The driver pulled over and called for help. Officers found Maciel on the right side of the highway, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators initially received information that Maciel may have fallen from a truck, but evidence at the scene led them to believe a passing vehicle struck him. Police said he appeared to have been crossing the highway from east to west.

Investigators believe the crash happened between 10 p.m. Wednesday and midnight. They are still working to narrow down the timeline.
