EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS4) — Viliami Teu rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns to lead the San Jose State Spartans to a 24-11 victory over the UTEP Miners at the Sun Bowl on Saturday.
UTEP falls to 1-5 (0-3 Mountain West). SJSU moves to 4-3 (2-1 Mountain West).
UTEP started fast with EJ Colson hitting Kam Thomas for a 64-yard completion on the first play of the ball game. However, the Miners couldn’t capitalize and Carlos Arreola missed a chip shot field goal. The Spartans responded by marching right down the field and taking the lead with a Daniel Rolovich 11-yard touchdown to Carson Clark.
In the second quarter, Colson was injured after getting sacked and would lead the ball game. The Miner defense would keep UTEP in the ball game and hold the Spartans to the 7-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Teu would rush for two touchdowns, including a 67-yard touchdown to put SJSU up 21-0. UTEP would find a bit of positivity in the fourth quarter with Nik Henry scoring an 8-yard touchdown off a jet sweep. However, the night ultimately ended in disappointment for UTEP with SJSU taking the 24-11 victory.
For UTEP, Colson was 6-6 for 87 yards before exiting. Raymond Moore III was 19 of 28 for 195 yards and he rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries.
UTEP gave up total 11 sacks.
For SJSU, Rolovich was 12 of 23 for 193 yards with the touchdown.
Teu carried the ball 20 times for the 159 yards and the two touchdowns.
UTEP now heads into their bye week beat up. The Miners lost Colson, starting running back Tavorus Jones and starting safety Kode Lowe all to injury on Saturday. On Oct. 31 the Miners will travel to Fargo, North Dakota to take on 6-1 North Dakota State.
