Quarterback: C-

Once again, a fourth-quarter turnover by Arch Manning helped seal the loss for Texas. The senior made perhaps the best throw of his career with a scrambling dart downfield to Emmett Mosley V for 62 yards on fourth-and-7 to set up a 9-yard TD pass to Cam Coleman. That trimmed Florida’s lead to 27-24 with 4 minutes, 21 seconds left in the game. But on the Longhorns’ next drive, Manning lost a fumble at midfield and Texas never got the ball back. For the game, Manning threw for just 173 yards on 14-of-20 passing and never pushed the ball down the field.

Running backs: B

Freshman Derrek Cooper missed the game with an undisclosed injury, but Hollywood Smothers (12 carries, 52 yards) and Raleek Brown (eight carries, 47 yards, one TD) picked up the slack albeit against a weak run defense. The pair ran hard, but just didn’t get many touches. One note: No back had a pass reception, a rarity in a Steve Sarkisian offense.

‘Most overrated ever’: Social media piles on Texas football after loss to unranked Florida

Wide receivers: C

Take away that 62-yard reception by Mosley — the longest play of the season for Texas — and Longhorns wideouts had almost no impact on the game. Coleman had just three catches for 18 yards and continues to serve as perhaps the highest-paid decoy in the country. Ryan Wingo led the team with five catches for 49 yards.

A veteran unit couldn’t sustain any drives against a Florida defense that had allowed a total of 83 points in its previous two games, both losses. Of Texas’ 11 drives, six lasted three plays or less. The unit also gave up five sacks. In particular, right tackle Melvin Siani struggled in pass protection. Overall, Texas had a total of 272 yards on 50 plays.

Defensive line: C

Texas generated just one sack, which came from Colin Simmons in the second half. Unfortunately for Texas, Simmons left the game with what Sarkisian called “a lower leg injury” in the second half and did not return after racking up four tackles for a loss. With or without him, the unit had its worst game of the season; Florida converted eight of 19 third-down plays while controlling the clock for 38:11, and the line got shoved around.

Linebackers: C+

Justin Cryer led the team with 11 tackles and Rasheem Biles chipped in seven. But Brad Spence and Colton Vasek again had quiet days, and the positional depth remains a big concern as the season wears on. The starting tandem did help hold Florida star running back Jadan Baugh to 91 yards on 25 carries.

In his first start of the season in place of the injured Aaron Philo, Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. completed 22 of 35 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. He also juked Texas safety Jelani McDonald in the backfield on a 9-yard run on third-and-7 late in the game that all but sealed the win. Florida’s banged up receivers had plenty of room to roam all afternoon.

Finally, a bright spot for Texas. Punt returner Ryan Niblett broke out of a season-long slump with a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown, his first of the season. It’s the third punt return for a touchdown in his UT career, which ties Jordan Shipley, Aaron Ross and Jim Moore for the school record. Mac Chiumento averaged 42.2 yards a punt, and kicker Gianni Spetic made his only field-goal attempt of the game with a 38-yarder. He’s now 9-for-9 on field goals from less than 50 yards.

Sarkisian seemed almost shell-shocked in his postgame press conference, and understandably so. The offensive play-caller scripted out a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the Longhorns’ first drive and followed that with an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped by a field goal. After that? Texas had 167 yards on 36 plays the rest of the game. Sarkisian has to figure out why his offenses start fast but always get bogged down.

D.R. was the best BY FAR. Mack had superior athletes and won DESPITE COACHING; Gregg Davis was terrible.. i AM 80 AND SAW MANY HC’s. D.R. RARELY LOST 2ND HALF UNLIKE SARK who often does frequently because of his play calling despite great players. D.R. HAD good (NOT GAME CHANGERS) PLAYERS INDIVIDUALLY. I was in Longhorn band 63-68 and saw every game.
