Families in a massive San Antonio school district will soon get an update on the future of operations at several of their campuses. Before the update, administrative officials will make their case to the area’s Regular Board of Trustees on Monday, October 19.
Leaders of the North East Independent School District (NEISD) will “give recommendations concerning program shifts, consolidations and/or campus closures,” according to a press release. They will also present the latest findings from the NEISD Efficiency Committee.
NEISD emphasized that tonight’s event will not include a vote; it is purely a presentation for the seven public officials who govern the district. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the NEISD Board Room at 8961 Tesoro Drive. It will also be livestreamed on NEISD’s YouTube channel.
Last winter, district officials began acting on a prior proposal to consolidate campuses amid declining enrollment. In February, NEISD announced that three campuses would close ahead of the 2025-2026 school year. Superintendent Dr. Sean Maika claimed the changes would begin to address the district’s $62.5 million budget deficit, which stemmed from a lack of state funding, a teacher pay raise and declining birth rates.
Conversations about how to address the deficit have continued. An NEISD committee began reviewing a list of 16 schools for efficiency and challenges in September, MySA reported. Campuses with fewer than 450 students, utilization below 60% and a cost per student that was 5% above the district average or higher were included.
NEISD lists the following campuses under its “presents challenges” category.
