The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has extended a nightly closure for another two days on Interstate 35 in Austin. TxDOT first announced that the State Highway 45 Southeast flyover to northbound I-35 would be closed last week until Sunday, October 18, but in a new update the state agency revealed the closure would continue on Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20.

The SH 45 SE flyover will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. both Monday and Tuesday nights as work continues on TxDOT’s massive I-35 expansion project in Austin. In the state agency’s initial X post, TxDOT encouraged drivers to follow detour signs as shown in a traffic map.

Instead of taking the flyover, nightly drivers coming from State Highway 45 can take the I-35 access road south and turn around at Cabelas Drive to enter northbound I-35 at Cabela’s Drive, per TxDOT.

This October marks two years since construction crews first started work on I-35’s reconstruction and expansion near downtown Austin, slated to continue over the next 10 years.  The I-35 Capital Express South portion of the project will add two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) managed lanes in each direction along I-35 between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard and SH 45 Southeast, according to TxDOT’s website.

In addition, the project will include a southbound I-35 bypass lane, newly constructed entrance and exit ramps and added pedestrian and bicycle paths. Depending on the weather, construction on the project is expected to be finished by late 2028.
