Día de los Muertos: Simple ideas for a meaningful ofrenda honoring a loved one

  • October 19, 2026

HOUSTON – Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that celebrates the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. Families honor them with stories, music, food and traditions shared across generations.

A central part of the celebration is the ofrenda, or altar. It’s a personal tribute that may include photos, flowers, candles, favorite foods or keepsakes that remind a family of someone special. There’s no one right way to create one — even a few meaningful items can make it feel complete.

Ana Garcia, known online as The Bucket List Latina, says a favorite treat or family recipe can bring a loved one’s story back to life. Children can help choose what to include, decorate the altar or share a favorite memory — taking part in traditions families pass down to the next generation.

As you gather items, think about which personal artifact reminds you of your relative, friend or even pet. From flowers to candles, favorite sweets and more, Walmart helps you bring those personal touches together. Selection varies by store, so check your local Walmart for availability.
