LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains area is in for a pleasant stretch through Friday. Dry conditions and temperatures gradually warming. Of course, this time of year, don’t get too comfortable. The weekend will bring a pattern change with increasing chances for rain and a slight cooldown.
While not as chilly as recent mornings, still quite cool Tuesday morning.(KCBD First Alert)
Warming Trend
This work week is shaping up nicely. After a cool start Monday with highs in the low 70s, temperatures will edge up a slightly each afternoon through late-week. By Wednesday and Thursday, I expect highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s across the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. That is a few degrees above average.
Light winds and mostly clear skies will keep things comfortable and dry through Friday. Nothing extreme, just pleasant weather.
Slightly warmer and a little breezy Tuesday afternoon.(KCBD First Alert)
Nights will stay quite cool, dropping into the 50s, which is just slightly above typical for this time of year.
If you’ve got outdoor plans or yard work in mind, this is a great time to tackle those projects.
Pattern Shifts
An upper-level high-pressure system keeping things dry and stable will move out of the way by the weekend. That will allow an area of low pressure to from the Pacific into the Desert Southwest. As this moves closer it will funnel subtropical moisture into our region.
Dry through the work week, then a chance of rain this weekend.(KCBD First Alert)
By Saturday, clouds will increase and rain chances will develop. We’re looking at showers and thunderstorms possible throughout the weekend and possibly into early next week. The exact timing and intensity are still being worked out, but currently the pattern change looks likely.
Temperatures will cool slightly as clouds move in and rain develops. After the warmth of the week, this will feel like a refreshing change.
Updates Ahead
The details on weekend rain chances will become clearer as we get closer to the end of the week. Some areas could see significant rainfall, while others may see less. That’s normal for most rain events here.

We’ll have more specifics as the system approaches, so stay with First Alert Weather for updates throughout the week.
On This Date
On this date in 1969, a strong tornado developed around 8 PM on the Carson farm located 4.5 miles north of Olton. The house and some outbuildings were severely damages and many smaller structures were swept away. The tornado moved northeast with a path width of only around 10 yards, but still blew out the north end of a barn on the Light farm. According to Mrs. Light, “When the tornado struck, it wasnt loud – it was sort of like a vacuum or like someone threw a blanket over the house”.
