A major wreck on the Southwest Side of San Antonio may have lasting impacts on drivers heading home Monday evening, October 19. What appears to be an 18-wheeler that was flipped on Interstate 35 has completely shut down the busy highway just as rush hour begins.

At around 3:15 p.m. Monday, the Von Ormy Police Department and the Texas Department of Transportation confirmed the wreck. The Von Ormy Police Department, Bexar County fire staff and Allegiance Mobile Health are on the scene.

No injuries were reported as of around 3:30 p.m., but drivers continue to be diverted from the busy intersection onto the access road. Traffic monitoring sites, such as SigAlert, are warning drivers of traffic delays of up to 2 hours.

Von Ormy PD officials on scene said drivers are being directed off I-35 at the Somerset Road exit while first responders handle the flipped commercial hauler.

“Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays, use caution and follow directions from responding officers,” the police department said. “We appreciate our partner agencies for their assistance and ask the public to remain patient as crews work to safely manage the scene.”

Maps already show miles of halted traffic in the southbound lanes of I-35 from Loop 1604 to Loop 410. As the clock ticks toward 5 p.m. – when folks begin driving home from work or picking up kids from school – these delays may worsen.
