A 45-year-old Austin man was arrested Saturday after police say he smashed a drinking glass into the face of a 65-year-old man during an argument at Matt’s El Rancho in South Austin, leaving the victim with a deep cut that required stitches.
John Brandon Taylor faces a third-degree felony charge of injury to an elderly individual in connection with the Oct. 17 incident at the restaurant in the 2600 block of South Lamar Boulevard, according to an arrest affidavit.
Austin police responded to the restaurant around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a physical altercation involving an older man who had been struck in the face with a glass.
The 65-year-old victim told police the confrontation began when Taylor attempted to walk past his dinner table,. The man said he asked Taylor to walk around the table, as he had done previously, but Taylor refused, police said.
The disagreement escalated into an argument, during which both men pushed each other, according to the affidavit. The victim told police Taylor then struck him in the face with a drinking glass, causing him to fall backward into friends seated at the table. Taylor allegedly pushed him again as he attempted to stand.
Officers found Taylor leaving the restaurant’s patio area with a blood-soaked towel wrapped around his injured hand, according to the affidavit. A witness pointed Taylor out to police, who said he acknowledged striking another man.
“I had a glass in my hand, and I smashed it against a guy’s face,” Taylor told an officer, according to the affidavit.
Officers found the victim inside an ambulance with his left cheek bandaged and blood covering his shirt. He had several cuts along the left side of his face, including a jagged, two-inch laceration to his cheek that hospital staff said would require stitches.
Police said witnesses corroborated the victim’s account of the confrontation, although investigators could not determine which man initiated the physical altercation.
Taylor also suffered a cut to his right palm, which he told police occurred when the glass shattered against the victim’s face.
Taylor was arrested at the scene. A Travis County magistrate found probable cause for his arrest Sunday, according to court records.
