Nearly 70 looks made out of recycled materials walked down the runway Saturday as part of Austin Creative Reuse’s annual fashion show.
The Reuse on the Runway show was established about five years ago to show off the creativity of local artists and draw attention to the waste the fashion industry creates.
The designers aren’t required to use any specific materials, but Jillian Srygley, the ACR’s artist program coordinator, said organizers are “pretty strict” about its reuse message.
Srygley said the event has grown every year. It started out at the Windsor Park shop, but now takes place at the Branch Park Pavilion in the Mueller neighborhood and draws about 500 spectators.

Xanya walks an outfit created by Bring Back the Weird down the runway. The look includes discarded pill bottles.

Avery Gonzales touches up her makeup backstage at the Branch Park Pavilion in the Mueller neighborhood. Her outfit, by designer Benjamin Sorrell, includes old bottle caps.

Dara Biegert Fry works on one of three designs she created for the show.

Max Wallace affixes a button to his design, “Tart in Tartan.”

Jay Byrd removes tape around his glittered forehead. Byrd was one of the show’s presenters.

Amanda Peckham and her son Ellis look at the run of show. Ellis wore an outfit Peckham designed called “Entre Huesos y Flores” (Between Bones and Flowers) that included corn husks, reused denim and upholstery swatches.

Designers and models work backstage ahead of the runway show.

Bining Taylor models Debra Martinez’s design, “The Swamp Witch: Keeper of Forgotten Things.” The outfit included feathers, egg cartons, netting and broken jewelry.

Sadie Okerstrom wears Futurekind Studio’s design, “The Star,” featuring secondhand fabrics and charms.

Charlotte Ellis high-fives an audience member as the models do a final walk down the runway Saturday.

Laura Freeman models her own design, “For the Children.” She incorporated toys, straws and plastic Easter eggs into her look.
