LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The 8th annual United Supermarkets Lubbock Marathon is expected to draw a record number of runners this weekend, and Lubbock police are asking drivers to be patient on the roads.
The race starts Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza, with runners winding through downtown and several city parks.
Road closures and police presence
Lubbock police said about 35 officers will be stationed at intersections. Barricades will be up, and parts of Mackenzie Park, Aztlan Park, Mae Simmons and the roads around Dunbar Lake will be closed until the race is over.
Drivers are urged to leave early or take another route to avoid getting caught behind the pack.
“Please understand that there will be streets that are blocked off. You will not be able to traverse them. If you attempt, then you’re going to get talked to and hopefully not ticketed for violating law. So, we just ask that people be patient,” said Chief Seth Herman, Lubbock Police Department.
Police also remind drivers it’s a crime to move or drive around a barricade.
