AUSTIN, Texas — Austin-Bergstrom is preparing for a busy stretch as Formula 1 fans travel to Central Texas.

At the same time, the airport is moving ahead with major construction projects, including a utility upgrade.

AUS expects busy travel days from Thursday through Tuesday, and while the airport gets ready for the crowds, it’s also breaking ground on projects meant to support future growth.

“The current record is just over 45,000 passengers in a single day,” Public Information Specialist at AUS, Jim Reynolds, said. “We don’t have the projected passenger count for Monday just yet.”

AUS recently added 12,000 square feet of space for travelers waiting to get through security.

“We opened the atrium infill,” Reynolds said. “Which provides 12,000 new square feet of queuing space for TSA screening.”

All four TSA checkpoints will be open, though services vary.

The utility project that broke ground Monday will upgrade airport power, drainage and water systems to support future expansion, including a new arrivals and departures hall and Concourse B.

“The utilities infrastructure campus-wide project represents a very key investment in the continued growth and reliability of our airport,” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said.

AUS is also building a parking garage with 3,000 spaces expected to open by late this year, with the rest in 2027.

The airport said it’s using airport reserves and revenue, not local tax dollars.

“We’re building a new large garage,” Reynolds said. “And it’s going to provide 7000 new parking spaces.”

Reynolds said construction won’t affect travelers this weekend.

“None of the construction projects that are in progress right now will be affecting any of the travelers to the airport for this super busy weekend,” he said.
