Texans are already lining up to vote, and Election Day, November 3, 2026, is now just weeks away. Just when you’d expect a wave of last-minute, high-profile celebrity endorsements, blockbuster actor Matthew McConaughey dropped a 6-minute endorsement for no one.

Rather than endorsing a candidate, or even a party, McConaughey simply threw his support behind a vaguely defined notion of political independence, saying: “Now let’s clear something up about the word ‘independent.’ Independent doesn’t mean middle of the road; independent was the original road.”

Jared Woodfill, with Conservative Republicans of Texas, says this just looks like an attempt by McConaughey to capitalize on the elections and gain more attention. He said: “This is someone who’s saying, ‘I’m not gonna review what these parties stand for; I’m just gonna say, go be independent,’ hoping it will draw more attention to my brand.”

Woodfill added that even if McConaughey did make an endorsement of one candidate or party over another, it would likely just be ignored, and Texans would simply go on to vote for whoever they planned to vote for anyway.
