LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock County Expo Center board has finalized its plan for a new multi-purpose venue and is ready to present it to county commissioners for approval, Chairman Randy Jordan said.
Jordan said the board has raised enough money to build the venue, which will remain in north Lubbock after an alternative option was presented to move the location downtown. The project has an all-in budget of $67 million, with funds coming from hotel occupancy tax collections and private funding.
Economic impact expected
Jordan said the multi-purpose event center will have a significant impact on residents across the South Plains and the local economy.
“This is what we have promoted since day one, the venue is not necessarily a profit for profit, but the economic impact of bringing people to Lubbock, serving our restaurants, buying fuel, shopping, staying in our hotels and motels. That’s what the multi-event center will do for Lubbock,” Jordan said.
County Commissioner Jason Corley of Precinct 2 said he is confident the plans will move forward and believes the whole city will benefit from the expo center.
“Optimistic, I think we’re ready to move forward with this project and you know, start turning dirt,” Corley said. “So, you’re going to see, if you come up a little short, well then that’s okay, you make the money back on sales tax, hotel tax, people coming to town, spending money, business owners being able to make more money that way.”
Venue capabilities
The expo center will host all kinds of events, Jordan said.
“A venue that allows us to bring back the ABC rodeo to Lubbock which is the primary fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lubbock,” Jordan said. “A venue to host mid-range concerts, monster trucks, motor cross, major livestock and equestrian events, and folks as we all know the list goes on and on of the people that will use the expo center.”
A timeline to break ground is still being determined. Once the plan is presented and approved by the Lubbock County commissioners, Jordan said the project can then move forward.
