The Arlington City Council approved changes to a $273 million agreement with the Dallas Cowboys to extend the team’s lease at AT&T Stadium, clarifying how taxpayer money can be spent.

Under the revised agreement, Arlington’s $273 million contribution is specifically designated for stadium maintenance, operations and management, KERA reported. The Cowboys remain responsible for funding and completing improvements by 2043.

The council approved the changes in a 7-2 vote Tuesday after consultations with bond attorneys and the Texas attorney general’s office.

The changes come as Arlington faces a lawsuit challenging its use of $273 million in voter-approved stadium taxes without another public vote. The City Council had voted to extend the team’s lease beyond 2040, adding 15 more years to their original agreement and enabling the city to use sales and venue taxes to upgrade the stadium.

The agreement is still not finalized and still requires approval from the Texas Attorney General’s Office. A trial is scheduled for May 2027.
