This year, there will be no sweat on San Antonio’s (uni)brow. The annual Frida Fest is moving to Maverick Plaza at La Villita on November 15-16, a cooler new setting for the Alamo City’s colorful homage to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
At its core, Frida Fest is a celebration of trailblazing women. According to a release, the event pays tribute to the “spirit embodied by individuals such as [Chicana scholar] Gloria Anzaldúa, [Costa Rican-Mexican singer] Chavela Vargas, Selena Quintanilla, and Frida Kahlo.” To that wit, the name serves as an acronym for “Fabulous, Respectful, Independent, Determined, and Assured.”
Although the venue is new, organizers Que Retro Arts and Curious Twins Paranormal are sticking to the successful formula of the past. Locals can expect more than 60 vendors, art galleries, photo opportunities, a fashion show, music, cultural performances, culinary demonstrations, artist panels, and Mexican food curated by Chef Johnny Hernandez.
And, of course, there is the night of 1,000 Fridas on November 15. All ages and genders are invited to come dressed as the legendary painter, as Frida Fest attempts to nab a Guinness World Record.
Since this is an official record attempt, there are a few rules for participation. Plan accordingly to ensure your costume has the following elements
A unibrow must join the eyebrows, drawn with makeup or created by sticking hair.A minimum of three artificial flowers must be worn in the hair.A red or pink shawl must be included in the outfit.Dresses must be floral print and extend below the knees on all sides. No slits are allowed.
The free Frida Fest is held from noon-6 pm on Saturday, November 15, and Sunday, November 16. Maverick Plaza is at 418 Villita St. near Hemisfair.
