Move over, “boring” San Antonio claims. A former Alamo City transplant laid into Texas online this month, taking aim at everything from H-E-B to the weather, the job market, infrastructure and even scorpions in a spicy Reddit post.

The poster’s assertions go well beyond the average “San Antonio is sooooo borrrring” allegations, claiming that their move to S.A., specifically, was… well, not the move.

“I survived 4 mos. in Texas,” the post begins.

Tired of living in Atlanta –– where this former transplant describes dealing with constant traffic, long commutes, and a high cost of living –– they began researching the Lone Star State and came across an article naming San Antonio among the top cities in Texas for Black professionals.

“I had this notion that I could move there, find a job, and pay far less for housing,” they said. “I was overconfident and thought I wouldn’t have any issues finding a government job based on my background, but I was dead wrong,” the post continued.

The positives

The Reddit user said there are many positives to living in San Antonio, showing love for the city’s food, friendly restaurant staff and plentiful shopping attractions.

“San Antonio has the best customer service I’ve ever experienced. No matter where I went, I was treated right…” they said. But when weighed against the challenges of finding even basic opportunities, they said it was an uphill battle from the very beginning.

Does San Antonio have a bad job market?

In the post, which has garnered more than 1,500 comments and nearly 1,000 upvotes, the Reddit user shared that they had trouble lining up a job or even getting callbacks on their resume, despite having several out-of-state certifications and other qualifications. Even their spouse had issues finding work that would have paid a suitable income.

“[M]y spouse was offered a position that required a bachelor’s degree, and they only offered her $15 an hour. San Antonio has poverty wages that you simply cannot survive on,” the post reads.

No love for H-E-B

The Redditor slammed H-E-B, saying the hype around their first introduction to the brand didn’t match what they expected.

“With the way this grocery chain was hyped online, I thought H-E-B was going to be this grand, magical grocery store and it’s not,” they wrote. “It offers average food at high prices; Kroger is way better.”

Bad roads, weather

Some people can’t handle the “hellfire” of Texas heat, but what really seemed to get under this Redditor’s skin was that the weather made it less appealing to go out during most of the day. Then, when they did venture out, they faced “endless” potholes and construction projects on the roads.

“Texas has some of the worst roads I’ve ever driven on,” the poster said flatly.

Scorpions

It’s no secret that scorpions head indoors to avoid the heat of Texas summers, but for this former transplant, the insects made two especially unwelcome visits to their home.

“I’m used to bugs, but scorpions are a different beast entirely. We found and killed two scorpions in my child’s room on separate occasions,” they said.
