Thanksgiving may be a little different in Lubbock this year.
I don’t know about you, but my Thanksgiving is generally pretty much set in stone. We get together with family, sometimes on both sides, and enjoy a big dinner.
Yeah, that’s pretty much it.
There’s no touch football on the front lawn or board games in the living room. We mostly sit around and visit while the food is cooking, eat a little too much, then sit around some more saying, “Man, I think I ate too much.”
That’s Thanksgiving, and in my book, it’s absolutely perfect.
Oh, and there’s the Thanksgiving nap. You know the one. It’s the nap you take in an easy chair because your belly is too full to comfortably lie down in bed. Yeah, that nap is important. Some might even say it’s the most important part of the holiday.
After that, we pick at the leftovers, visit a little more, and generally call it an early night after a busy day and all that food.
So what could possibly interrupt such perfect plans?
Texas Tech Has Other Plans for Thanksgiving Night
How about a little Texas Tech football?
The Red Raiders are hosting the TCU Horned Frogs on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 26, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Galaxy Stadium. The game will also be televised nationally on ESPN.
Now, that’s going to present an interesting choice for some Lubbock families.
Are you going to drag your overstuffed self off the couch, squeeze into some Red Raider gear, and head over to Galaxy Stadium? Or are you going to keep things close to home, loosen your belt another notch, and watch the game on ESPN?
There’s also the question of what happens to those family members who aren’t football fans. Do they get abandoned with the dirty dishes while everybody else heads to the game?
Personally, I have a lot of energy. Between my regular day job and a pretty demanding side hustle, I’m accustomed to staying busy. But even I think adding a nighttime football game to Thanksgiving might be a bit much.
Then again, if somebody’s smoking a turkey at a tailgate, I just might be convinced to venture out.
I’m not saying I can be bought, but a plate of smoked turkey and dressing might get the negotiations started.

Would You Change Your Thanksgiving Traditions for Texas Tech?
I know there are Red Raider fans who wouldn’t miss this game for anything. Heck, some families might even build their entire Thanksgiving schedule around kickoff.
And I can certainly understand that. A Thanksgiving night game under the lights in Lubbock could become a pretty special memory.
But I’m also a big believer in traditions, especially the ones that involve family, food, and absolutely nothing on the agenda.
So what about you?
Would you interrupt your family’s Thanksgiving traditions to attend a Texas Tech football game, or is this one you’re perfectly happy watching from the couch?
