Three dogs were found dead inside a van at a North Side storage facility, and a San Antonio police officer arrested two women on intoxication-related charges.
Brittany Samantha Urquidez, 31, and Kristine Leaigh Urquidez, 35, each face three counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals. A judge set Brittany Urquidez’s bail at $45,000 and Kristine Urquidez’s at $30,000.
Kristine Urquidez also faces a charge of driving while intoxicated, while Brittany Urquidez was charged with public intoxication.
On Oct. 21, a caller told police that two women had been asleep in a pickup truck for about two hours at the Life Storage facility at 7340 Blanco Road, according to a San Antonio Police Department report.
An officer found the women in the truck, which was parked beside a van with its windows covered by blankets. Both women woke up to speak with the officer.
The officer asked why the van’s windows were covered. The women said their dogs were inside and that they had been turning the van on and off throughout the day.
Kristine Urquidez failed a field sobriety test, while Brittany Urquidez fell back asleep. Both women were arrested on intoxication-related charges. The officer asked whether they had family members who could pick up the dogs.
The officer then approached the van, which was not running. He found an opening in the blankets and knocked on a window, but the dogs did not move.
When the officer opened the door, he smelled a strong, foul odor. He saw three dogs inside the van and wrote in his report that they were clearly dead.
The officer wrote that he believed the dogs’ deaths were directly related to the women negligently leaving them in the van without air conditioning.
